Gempa: Strong Earthquake Hits Indonesia


WASHINGTON, KOMPAS.com — A strong earthquake struck Indonesia early Friday local time, the U.S. Geological Survey said Thursday.
     
The quake measured a magnitude of 6.1, the survey reported. It hit at 2:33 a.m. Friday local time (1833 GMT) Thursday).
     
It struck at a depth of six miles and had its epicenter about 135 miles north-northeast of Baubau on Sulawesi and about 1,150 miles east of the capital, Jakarta.
     
An earthquake of magnitude 7.6 struck off West Sumatra in Indonesia on Sept. 30 and killed hundreds of people and caused massive property damage.
